Expanding Your Palette

My journey into the world of bourbon, spirits, and cigars didn’t begin with a refined palate or an innate knowledge of pairings—it began with curiosity. I used to stick to my favorite tequila and the same Connecticut-wrapped cigars because they felt familiar and safe. But one day, I was nudged to venture beyond my comfort zone- and that decision changed everything.

Trying a variety of spirits and cigars opened the door to flavors I’d never experienced and lessons I didn’t expect to learn. It wasn’t just about taste; it was about appreciating the craftsmanship, history, and artistry behind each bottle and cigar.

Philosophy

When I began exploring beyond my go-to choices, I discovered:

• There are thousands of tequilas better than the one I thought was “the best.”

• Cigar wrappers beyond Connecticut offer incredible flavor profiles and complexity.

• Pairing cigars with bourbon reveals layers of nuance and depth that elevate both experiences.

This willingness to explore led me to pursue certifications as an Executive Bourbon Steward and a Cigar Sommelier Tobacconist. Each step deepened my knowledge and passion, teaching me that a great way to expand your palate—and your appreciation—is by stepping out of your comfort zone.

When you try something new, you not only develop your taste but also gain a greater understanding of the artistry behind it. It’s about learning, growing, and finding joy in the unexpected.

The world of bourbon, spirits, and cigars is vast and full of surprises. By stepping out of your comfort zone, you open yourself up to new flavors, experiences, and passions. Whether you’re trying a new drink, a unique cigar, or an unexpected pairing, the journey is always worth it.
